The claim. If chess trains logical and cognitive thinking, does that effect "flow" into school performance? This is the most heavily studied question — and the answer is: yes, moderately, and most clearly in Math.

The evidence. A large-scale meta-analysis by Sala & Gobet — pooling 24 studies, 2,788 children who learned chess against 2,433 control children — found a moderate effect on cognitive ability and academic performance overall (g ≈ 0.34). Broken down by subject, the effect on Math (g ≈ 0.38) is larger than on Reading (g ≈ 0.25). One important condition: it takes at least 25–30 hours of chess instruction before the effect shows.

The mechanism. Chess and mathematics share a "thinking framework": recognizing patterns, if-then reasoning, spatial calculation, and testing hypotheses. Chess is thought to raise meta-cognition — the ability to "think about how you think" — which is the foundation of solving math problems.

The application. This is why many countries bring chess into schools. But note the caveat at the end of this article: the effect is moderate, and "far transfer" (great at chess → great at everything) remains much debated.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, following 469 people over age 75 for 21 years, found that those who regularly played strategy games like chess had up to ~74% lower risk of dementia compared with people who did no mentally engaging activity — higher than reading books (~35%) and doing crosswords (~38%). An Australian study of 10,318 people, followed for 10 years linked active mental engagement to a ~9% lower risk of dementia. The ACTIVE study further showed that the benefits of cognitive training can persist for up to 10 years after the intervention.

The mechanism. Chess mobilizes many of the brain's "functional regions" at once — memory, visual-spatial processing, calculation, executive function, attention — so it's seen as an exercise that builds cognitive reserve: a buffer that helps the brain hold up better as it ages.

An honest warning. This is correlational, not yet causal evidence. It may be that people who are already sharp are the ones drawn to chess, rather than chess making them sharp. But the direction of the effect is consistent, the mechanism is plausible, and playing chess does no harm — so it remains a habit well worth encouraging in old age.
